What is inspiration? Well, it’s certainly not a concrete thing, and trying to pin it down would be like trapping a lightning bolt in a glass jar. But I know from my personal experience that inspiration comes in many shapes and sizes…and circumstances.
Take a mountain range, for example, the towering peaks of Clark, Wyoming, specifically. In your mind, you could see a dragon standing atop its craggy face, majestic poise, green scales shimmering like polished jadeite as it unfurls its wings, spraying emerald flames from its jaws. (Yes, this sounds highly tailored, because this was actually a scene that I created in my head while standing at the foot of the mountains!) Or, let’s change it up. Suppose that this type of inspiration isn’t what floats your fancy. Perhaps you’re not even writing a dragon-centered novel or story. Your idea of inspiration could be a conversation you overheard, a spiritual or political opinion you hold, or even a small bur that stuck to your clothes. Still valid, but different. Inspiration cannot be useless, and all of it is not only welcome but also required in the world of storytelling!
So, to conclude my post, I will say this: keep your eyes and mind open, because you never know when or where a bout of inspiration will kick off your next story. Keep writing, and keep being inspired.
